Legacy Turbine Users Annual Conferences (Frame 5, Frame 6B, and 7EA) 2023

Location: Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass, Phoenix AZ
Date: 2023/07/17 - 2023/07/20
Booth: 40

Join MD&A at the 2023 Legacy Turbine Users Annual Conferences (Frame 5, Frame 6B, and 7EA) from July 17-20, 2023 in Phoenix AZ.

7EA Turbine Upgrade Solutions; Speaker: Andrew Koonce, Lead Gas Turbine Engineer of MD&A Parts Division

Customers with aging frame 7001B/E turbines may look to upgrade their units to the latest available 7EA technology.  Performing the upgrade can provide increased power output, reduced heat rate and or longer component life.  MD&A has completed multiple 7B to 7EA turbine upgrades.  This presentation will cover the technical aspects of performing the conversion, including key interface evaluations, component upgrades and lessons learned.  Upgrade solutions can be extensive including rotor wheels, combustion, gas path components and casings.  The specific upgrades for each site are based on plant needs and currently installed configurations.

7A6 Generator High Speed Balancing; Speaker: Keith Collins, General Manager of High Speed Balance for MD&A Repairs Division

High speed balance and operational speed testing of generators is a critical aspect of power generation plant commissioning and maintenance. The testing is conducted to ensure that the 7A6 generator operating at its design speed remains in balance under a range of normal operating conditions. The high speed balance test involves measuring the vibration of the rotating components of the generator at various speeds. The data collected is analyzed to determine the balance quality and identify any issues that may affect the safe and efficient operation of the plant.

Operational speed testing is carried out to verify that the generator will operate at its design speed and to ensure that it can withstand the stresses and strains of normal operation. This testing involves measuring speed vs. vibration curves of the generator under different operating conditions. The data collected is analyzed to determine if the generator is operating within its design parameters and if any adjustments need to be made to optimize its balance. Overall, high speed balance and operational speed testing of generators is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable power generation.

Case studies will be provided on thermal testing results, component substitution and unbalance, and the effects of exciter unbalance for fields with brushless excitation.
