I am an operations and general management leader with over three decades of experience in the power generation services industry, specializing in steam and gas turbine maintenance and outage execution. I began my career as a Field Engineer and have since combined my technical expertise with executive leadership skills to consistently deliver safe, high-quality, and profitable outcomes for customers across the global power generation market. I currently serve as General Manager at Mechanical Dynamics & Analysis, where I lead a 90+ person team and drive full profit and loss performance across a large portfolio of projects.<\/p>\n

What does your role as General Manager involve in supporting customers and teams across the steam turbine side of the business? What aspect do you enjoy most about your role at MD&A? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

As General Manager, my role is centered on aligning our teams, resources, and capabilities to deliver safe<\/a>, high-quality outage execution for our customers consistently. I stay closely engaged with both customers and internal teams, supporting everything from early-stage planning<\/a> and proposal development through execution and post-outage review. A key part of the role is ensuring our field teams have what they need to succeed, while maintaining strong communication with customers to anticipate challenges and provide solutions that add value.<\/p>\n

What I enjoy most about my role at MD&A is the customer service aspect, which includes a combination of technical problem-solving and team leadership. Every project presents a new challenge, and I take a lot of pride in working alongside a highly experienced team to deliver options and results that make a real impact for our customers. Seeing our teams execute safely and successfully, and our culture of learning from mistakes, especially in high-pressure outage environments, is what makes the role most rewarding.<\/p>\n

What are the most common operational challenges you see in steam turbines today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The most common challenges we see today stem from aging fleets, more demanding operating conditions, and increasingly compressed outage schedules. Many units are running beyond their original design life, leading to issues like blade wear, cracking, and sealing degradation, while more frequent cycling introduces additional stress on critical components.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the industry is operating in a period of high demand with limited skilled resources, both on the service provider side and often within our customers\u2019 organizations. Many operators have less hands-on experience with major outages, which increases the importance of strong planning, clear communication, and trusted technical guidance. Balancing thorough inspections with shorter timelines requires experienced teams, disciplined execution, and the ability to adapt quickly in the field.<\/p>\n

How do your steam turbine teams collaborate with other MD&A divisions to provide integrated solutions?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Our steam turbine teams collaborate closely with our Repairs<\/a>, Controls<\/a>, and Parts<\/a> teams by engaging early in the pre-outage planning process and maintaining strong communication throughout execution. This alignment allows us to provide timely solutions as necessary with integrated scopes, share technical insights, and help ensure all aspects of the outage are coordinated effectively.<\/p>\n

By leveraging the specialized expertise of each team, we\u2019re able to deliver more comprehensive solutions that reduce risk, improve efficiency, and minimize outage duration.<\/p>\n

From your experience, what early signs of wear or damage should operators pay closer attention to?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From our experience, the most important thing operators can do is consistently follow and adhere to OEM-recommended inspection and maintenance practices. These guidelines are based on the original design with the intent of the equipment and provide the best baseline for identifying early signs of wear before they develop into larger issues.<\/p>\n

Common indicators we see that may indicate a problem during operations include changes in vibration<\/a> or bearing temperatures, as well as any other abnormal operating trends.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, success comes down to discipline, staying aligned with recommendations while also leveraging operational data and field experience to catch issues early and plan proactive maintenance.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose to work for MD&A and why have you continued to choose to work at MD&A? How would you describe our company culture?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I chose to work at MD&A to get away from the bureaucracy of working for an OEM and join a customer-focused company with strong technical capabilities and the reputation the company has built in the market for delivering high-quality, customer-focused solutions. It was clear early on that the organization values both deep expertise and a practical, field-oriented approach to solving problems.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve continued to choose MD&A because of the people and the culture<\/a>. It\u2019s a team of experienced professionals who are committed to doing things the right way, prioritizing safety, quality<\/a>, and accountability. The culture is very collaborative and hands-on, with a strong emphasis on learning from each project and continuously improving. That combination of technical depth, teamwork, and a customer-first mindset is what makes MD&A a great place to work.<\/p>\n

What did you want to have as a job when you were a kid?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When I was a kid, I wanted to open a small engine repair business. We didn\u2019t have any reliable equipment growing up, so if something broke, we fixed it (without YouTube!). I spent a lot of time in the barn working on worn-out equipment like small engines, tractors, min-bikes, etc., with limited tooling and experience. It helped me learn how things worked, and over time, I really enjoyed and got pretty good at fixing things.<\/p>\n

That early hands-on experience, coupled with my parents letting me try with limited restrictions or oversight, is really what sparked my interest in mechanical systems and ultimately led me into this industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
