About the Presenters

Sean McLenithanSean McLenithan Since joining MD&A in 1999, Sean has successfully developed, managed and presented at technical seminars on turbine-generator related topics that are conducted throughout the United States. Sean is responsible for the management and creation of all MD&A's corporate training programs, promotional material, multimedia productions and training seminars.

Sean attended the State University at Oswego where, in 1992, he graduated Cum Laude and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He next attended the State University of at Albany where he received his Masters of Business Administration degree in Marketing Management and directed the university's International Trade Mission program.

Gary MillerGary Miller has more than 31 years of experience in motor and generator repair. He was a top winder for 10 years and a lead winder for 2 more years in a GE service shop. Mr. Miller has worked on numerous stator and field rewinds, including those on some of the largest two and four-pole units in the world. He has had domestic and international assignments on units used in both nuclear and fossil-fired applications.

Since joining MD&A, has worked as a lead winder and generator specialist on many types of repairs, including: copper dust inspections, copper dust rewinds, main lead change outs, full field rewinds, full stator rewinds, top turn isolation and top turn isolation rewinds, stand-off insulator modifications, high voltage bushing replacements, series loop vibration modifications for Lynn-designed stators, and electrical testing, including the 60Hz ac hi-pot. He has also provided technical direction to non-skilled customer personnel performing a full stator rewedge, which included corona deposit removal and application of corona-suppressive materials. Mr. Miller has also completed many technical courses in his field of generator repair.

Mark SmithMark Smith has extensive ex¬perience in predic¬tive mainte¬nance, vibration analysis, bal¬anc¬ing, strain gage testing, radio teleme¬try, and in the installation of vibration moni¬toring systems and TSI retro¬fits.

Mr. Smith was employed by the Common¬wealth Edison Compa¬ny for over 7 years as an in-house consultant for the comp¬any's 16 generating stations. In that capacity, he was re¬sponsible for coordinating the support of the predictive mainte¬nance programs at each of the generating stations. He has also performed vibration analysis and balancing of rotating machinery on a wide variety of equipment.

Mr. Smith has also been involved in a diverse range of mechanical testing and analysis projects involving piping vibration, strain measurement, rotor torsional response, control valve response, and continuous on-line machinery monitoring.

In 1990, Mr. Smith was a founding partner of Mid-America Dynamics, a mechanical vibration and testing company. At this time he became associated with MD&A.

Mr. Smith received BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a licensed professional engineer. He is a member of the Vibration Institute and the Society For Experimental Mechanics. He has had several papers published on vibration analy¬sis, predictive maintenance, and remote monitoring applications.

Dave AlbrightDave Albright Consulting Engineer, Flux Probes

David Albright has a broad background in signal analysis in the biomedical and power industries. For the past seven years, Mr. Albright has focused on developing software and hardware for the detection of rotor winding shorted turns in synchronous generators and motors. Since joining Generatortech, Mr. Albright has developed MS-Windows based software that has simplified the process used to detect rotor winding shorted turns. Mr. Albright has an MS in electric engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jeff CaudellJeff Caudell joined MD&A in 1999 as a Generator Specialist.

Jeff had nearly 10 years experience with GE as a Field Engineer and Generator Specialist. Mr. Caudell's experience includes both field and stator maintenance and testing on both large and small machines. Jeff has considerable experience in clip to strand leak repairs and testing as outlined in the GE TIL 1098. Mr. Caudell is a 1989 graduate of Purdue University where he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology. His hobbies include antique auto restoration and flying ultralight aircraft.

Gary C. GriffithGary Griffith Manager of Engineering

Gary Griffith has 22 years experience in the utility industry. Mr. Griffith was a principal engineer responsible for generator and exciter maintenance at Florida Power & Light. In this position he was responsible for generators on 11 plant sites, encompassing 26 steam driven generators and 48 gas turbine-generators. Mr. Griffith's responsibilities included providing technical expertise to fossil plants for diagnosing complex problems in generators, large motors, and high voltage switch gears. He was also involved with providing visual inspections and electrical testing, resulting in condition assessment with recommendations.

He developed a generator assessment program for on-line diagnostics and off-line assessments. He has provided the installation expertise for flux probes, partial discharge probes, and is capable of taking and interpreting data from these probes.

Prior to working for Florida Power & Light, Mr. Griffith was a plant engineer with Montana Power Co. at Colstrip station where he was responsible for large motor testing and rewind specifications, and troubleshooting electrical and instrumentation problems.

Mr. Griffith joined the MD&A generator team in March of 1994 and returned in 2001 as Manager of Generator Engineering after working with Florida Power & Light.

Mr. Griffith graduated from Montana State University in 1982 with a BS degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

William (Bill) G. Moore

William (Bill) G. Moore, P.E., is Director, Product Development for National Electric Coil (NEC) in Columbus, Ohio. His responsibilities include identification and implementation of new product opportunities, as well as technical proposal support.  For the past 8 years, he has been Engineering Manager at NEC, responsible for all high voltage coil and rotor rewind design activities.

Previously, Bill held utility power plant management positions with Florida Power & Light, working at three different power plants, over a ten year time span.  A licensed professional engineer in Ohio and Florida, he started his 27 year power industry career as a generator design engineer with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation.  He has been awarded several design related generator patents and has published and presented over 45 papers in the power generation field.  He is a frequent short course lecturer on generator industry issues.

Bill is a past chairman of the ASME Power Division and the ASME Turbine, Generators and Auxiliaries Technical Committee. He is a past recipient of the EPRI Innovator Award, and the "Author's Award" from Hydro Review Magazine.   He has a Master's and Bachelor's of Science degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, and Notre Dame University, respectively, along with an M.S. in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology.
