Rotating Component Repair Services

Rotating Component RepairsMD&A has been providing engineering and repair services for owners of heavy rotating equipment for over 16 years. Our offerings include a complete array of rotor repair services, backed by the experience of factory-trained engineers. Most repairs on rotors up to 100 tons can be performed on-site, anywhere in the world or in one of our shops. MD&A maintains a vast inventory of portable lathes and other field machining equipment dedicated to address the repair of turbine rotors.

An abbreviated list of MD&A's rotating component services includes:

  • Rotor surface cleaning using 220 grit aluminum oxide bead
  • Thorough visually inspections by factory-trained steampath engineers or specialists
  • Full NDE of rotor surfaces, peripherals and bores were applicable using magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current and boresonic inspections
  • Sonic testing of finger buckets, dovetail pins and wheel dovetails
  • Wheelsonic testing of shrunk-on and integral turbine wheels
  • Removal and replacement of bore plugs
  • Dimensional checks, including run out checks on couplings, journals and mid-span areas of rotors
  • Structural and efficiency steampath audits
  • Reverse engineering of rotors for uprate/upgrade projects
  • Dovetail machining/enhanced geometry
  • Journal refinishing, coupling face grinding and machining to remove out-of-roundness and scoring
  • In-place journal machining
  • Thrust runner face refinishing to remove run out
  • Packing and oil deflector machining
  • Shaft metallizing of water impeller fits & restoration
  • Line boring of coupling bolt holes
  • Restoration of the rabbet fit
  • Failure analysis and second opinions on repair recommendations
  • Analyze and re-machine bowed rotors
  • Provide installation of Hitachi CCB long buckets
  • Reverse engineer, supply and install new pine-tree, finger, tangential entry, axial entry blades and buckets
  • Erosion shield replacement
  • Bucket and blade cover replacement

On Site or In-Shop Low-Speed Balancing

  • (8) Machines up to 200 ton capacity
  • 2-bearing rotors
  • Single journal rotors utilizing a stubshaft
  • High speed balance upon request
