Turbine Engineering Services

Steam turbine and generator outages often require the need for mechanical engineers who specialize in disciplines such as steampath audits, thermodynamics or remaining life analysis. MD&A has been providing highly qualified turbine-generator engineers to the power generation industry for almost three decades. We employ a large turbine-generator engineering staff that focuses specifically on the specialized field engineering required to address steam turbine and generator outages.

  • Turbine Engineering

MD&A is a leading supplier of turbine steampath engineering services. We provide experienced, on-site engineering personnel, most of whom are factory-trained and have completed years of OEM field experience prior to joining our team. Our engineers are fully supported by the bench strength of our outage services division to support the goal of technical excellence on every project.

For additional information please contact Phil Lamovec or Jeff Newton at our corporate offices by calling 518-399-3616.

  • Distortion Correction

Steam turbines, especially those used for cyclic operations, are subjected to enormous thermal stresses that can change the physical properties of the turbine alloys and result in distorted internal components, shells, casings, valves and even the turbine rotor. Distorted components can result in leakages, steam cutting, loss of efficiency and forced outages. TURBINE CONSULTANTS® provides proprietary distortion correction techniques and procedures to permanently address issues associated with out-of-round shells, nozzles and other critical steampath components.

  • Acceptance Testing

MD&A can defend your interests during an acceptance test by verifying that tests are performed accurately, according to terms and as defined in the test codes. We provide instrument audits and calibration recommendations prior to testing to minimizing uncertainty. MD&A's turbine engineering staff  can address the issues of uncertainty before they become the source of litigation by counseling clients during the initial contract writing phase of the project.

  • Thermodynamic Analysis

MD&A analyzes cycle efficiency and makes recommendations for correcting thermal problems. Our turbine engineering focus is to determine the thermodynamic condition of your turbine and the other components in the cycle. Analysis helps isolate problems and determine what problems exist. Data collected from station instrumentation is often used to help in this isolation. We offer pre and post-outage testing, uprate analysis and heatbalance modeling. • Balancing & Vibration Analysis

Since our founding, we’ve enjoyed a reputation as innovators, practitioners and teachers in the art of balancing and vibration analysis of heavy rotating equipment. We use influence coefficient balance methods, which offer the best assurance of reliable results. We offer on-site balance and vibration experts experienced in using a wide range of vibration analysis equipment along with 24 hour emergency service and on-site low-speed balance services for rotors weighing up to 400,000.

  • Steam Path Audits

A steam path audit is a physical inspection of the turbine steampath, conducted while the rotor is on the half-shell. The purpose is to identify and quantify performance problems due to deterioration of steampath components. Engineers and maintenance personnel use the results of audits to identify the most cost-effective repairs and to justify repair recommendations. MD&A offers both thermodynamic and structural audits. Audits are also an excellent way to predict the return to service performance of your machine, following repairs.

  • Control / Excitation Field Engineering

MD&A Control Systems maintains a staff of OEM experienced field engineers. We offer technical support, advanced troubleshooting, installation, and training for gas and steam turbine controls and generator excitation systems, as well as for auxiliary systems. We employ engineers specializing in the full range of MHC and EHC controls, including GE Mark I through Mark VI systems. We offer turbomachinery consulting, customized data collection and analysis, and start-up support.

  • Remaining Life & Finite Element Analysis

TURBINE CONSULTANTS® leads the power generation industry with computer engineered solutions that address issues associated with an aging turbine fleet. We use finite element analysis to precisely model turbine components and determine the root cause of component issues and to evaluate the remaining life shells, rotors, valves and other integral parts subject to high thermal stress factors. An engineering review of the output allows our engineers to answer all questions regarding the remaining life, failure mechanisms or design analysis.
