Hydraulic System Upgrades

GE large steam turbine, Electro-hydraulic fluid systems currently utilize either Vickers or Dennison high pressure fluid pumps. These pumps, which were supplied with the original hydraulic power unit are slow to respond toHydraulic System Upgrades system demand. This slow response (1-3 seconds from no flow to full flow) causes many problems with the control system. The most pronounced problems occur during valve tests, causing major swings in manifold pressure and could cause the turbine to trip.

Many utility stations who currently use these pumps have experienced problems as the pumps show signs of age. GE distributed a TIL (Technical Information Letter) #1115-3R1 in 1992. The TIL states that the Vickers PV2032 and PV2050 hydraulic pumps have both been discontinued. MD&A Control Systems Division, in conjunction with Rexroth, the worlds largest supplier of hydraulic components, offers a replacement kit for both the Vickers and Dennison hydraulic pumps.

Replacement consist of removing both inlet suction strainers, replacing both existing high pressure fluid pumps and motors. In addition, a special pump/motor mounting assembly is added which positions the new pump well below the fluid level on the outside of the reservoir. To mount the new pumps the existing space heaters are replaced by state-of-the-art tank heating pads that interface to the existing thermostat control. The pump discharge piping up to the inlet of the Pall Discharge Filter will also be replaced, including both of the existing relief valves. Two discharge line-isolation valves are also added between each Pall Discharge Filter and the manifold check valves. All piping and fittings being added to the system are welded stainless steel.

In addition to the parts and pieces, we provide one on-site Technical Director who provides instructions to properly install and start-up the new system. The modification can be completed within five, ten-hour shifts with the unit off-line and the reservoir drained (no EHC flush will be required following installation.) Following the installation and startup of the upgraded system an EHC system hydraulic fluid-flow analysis is conducted. Our price includes the replacement of both pumps, motors relief valves, and space heaters, including installation technical direction and an EHC system hydraulic fluid-flow analysis. Shipping, travel and living expenses are the only additional charges.
